WHAT IS A .UZ DOMAIN

.uz Domain: Uzbekistan's Official Country Extension

.uz is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) of Uzbekistan, entered into the root zone on 29 April 1995. The zone is administered from Tashkent by UZINFOCOM, the single integrator responsible for creating and supporting state information systems. Registration is governed by the domain names regulation approved by order no. 155 of the Uzbek Agency for Communications and Informatization of 26 May 2008, registered with the Ministry of Justice on 23 June 2008 and last amended on 28 June 2022.

The eligibility article of that regulation is a single sentence and leaves no room for doubt: «Любое физическое и юридическое лицо, вне зависимости от национальности и местонахождения имеет право регистрировать доменное имя в домене „UZ“» — any natural or legal person may register, whatever their nationality and wherever they are located. There is no residency requirement, no Uzbek address, no local contact person and no trustee arrangement. A company applying from abroad goes through the same process as one in Tashkent.

The zone is growing: the registry's own statistics page showed 163,500 active domain names on 11 August 2026, against 143,785 at the start of the year. That is a curve on which short, good names disappear quickly. Priority for a name that is not on the reserved list belongs to whoever files the application first. Check whether your candidate is free today with domain search.

The window after expiry is only 7 working days: According to the registry's own sources, once registration ends the name stays with its current administrator for just 7 working days, after which it becomes available to others. The comparison is instructive: in many country extensions that recovery window runs from 30 to 90 days. The cost of missing a renewal in .uz is therefore markedly higher than in the extensions you are used to. Put the renewal in your calendar at least two weeks ahead of the expiry date, not on it.

Day 0 is the domain's expiry date

In short: for .uz the post-expiry timeline is set by the registry, so it differs from one extension to the next. The diagram below shows the windows that actually apply to .uz, day by day. One thing never changes, whichever extension you hold: renewing before the expiry date is always the cheapest and safest route.

Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .uz address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 10 years

Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Redemption Period (Redemption Period)

Day 0 – 30

The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.

Domain Is Available Again

After day 30

Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .uz Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • The regulation closes this question in one sentence: any natural or legal person, whatever their nationality and wherever they are located, may register a .uz name. There is no residency requirement in Uzbekistan, no local address, no local contact person and no trustee arrangement. The second level of .uz is open to individuals as well; the zones that restrict registration to organisations are the generic ones such as .com.uz and .co.uz.

  • The regulation sets no general document requirement. What it asks for is the standard application form in its appendices, filled in completely and accurately: name or company name, identification, postal and email addresses, telephone and DNS server details. Organisations additionally provide bank details and administrative, technical and billing contacts. The registrar keeps the right to seek confirmation that the information is genuine, but that is not a paperwork condition applied up front.

  • According to the registry's own information page, the term of registration and re-registration runs from one year to ten years. The regulation itself leaves the term to the contract between the registrar and the domain administrator and fixes only the floor: it may not be less than one year. In practice the choice is yours, and a longer term is the simplest way to reduce renewal risk in a zone with a short recovery window.

  • After registration ends the name stays with its current administrator for only 7 working days; once that additional period closes, it becomes available for others to register. Because that window runs 30 to 90 days in many country extensions, missing a renewal in .uz costs markedly more: you have a few working days to recover the name, not weeks. Plan the renewal at least two weeks before the expiry date rather than on it.

  • The regulation requires a name to consist of more than one character; the permitted signs are the letters a-z, the digits 0-9 and the hyphen. A name may neither begin nor end with a hyphen. Names outside the Latin alphabet are registered through IDN encoding with the «XN--» prefix, and the registry publishes its own converter for the purpose. Registering a brand written in Cyrillic or in the Uzbek alphabet is therefore technically possible.

  • The regulation defines priority explicitly: for a name that is not on the reserved list and does not conflict with the law or with international agreements to which Uzbekistan is party, priority belongs to whoever files the application first. Applications reach the registrar through its web systems, by email or in writing. A name showing as free in a search is not held in your name until you complete that application.

  • The regulation points first to negotiation: «стороны могут регулировать отношения путем переговоров». A dispute that cannot be settled that way goes to court. This differs from many country extensions — .uz has no UDRP-style arbitration procedure — so a trade mark claim proceeds through the judicial route rather than through an expedited administrative one. If trade mark protection is critical for you, build that difference into your plan.

  • The registry's special domain names page lists the zones and who each is open to: ac.uz for research organisations, higher education and cultural institutions; com.uz and co.uz for commercial organisations; edu.uz for holders of an educational licence; int.uz for international organisations; net.uz for organisations running internet development projects; org.uz for non-commercial organisations; and pp.uz for individuals.
