WHAT IS A .PARTNERS DOMAIN

The .partners Domain: For Businesses Built on Partnership

The .partners domain reached the root zone on 30 January 2014 under an ICANN agreement dated 5 December 2013, with Binky Moon, LLC of the Identity Digital group as contracting party. On 13 August 2026 the zone held 21,195 registrations and 17,203 of them appeared in the zone file, meaning four in every five registered names resolve to something.

Law and consulting firms, investment partnerships, architecture practices, reseller and partner programmes and channel sales sites make up the registrant base. Since the word can describe both a legal structure and a working relationship, the second-level label should settle which one you mean. Try candidates in .partners domain search and weigh a close alternative on the .associates page.

Partnership status is not required, and cannot be

The open registration commitment in the agreement forbids the registry from applying an identity-based eligibility test. It therefore cannot reserve the extension for entities constituted as partnerships in the legal sense: a sole trader or a limited company registers on identical terms. The consequence for a visitor is worth stating plainly: the extension does not verify a legal structure. If your partnership form matters to clients, set it out in your imprint and contract pages, because the address alone will not carry that information.

.partners Domain Lifecycle

Active registration term 1 - 10 years You choose it at registration
Renewal window 20 days After expiry, with a late renewal fee
Redemption period 30 days After deletion, with a restore fee
Last day to act Day 50 After this day there is no way back

What happens day by day after it expires

Day 0 is the domain's expiry date

In short: your .partners domain is put on Client Hold on its expiry date, so the site and e-mail stop that same day. You can still renew during the first 20 days, but from this point a late renewal fee is added on top of the renewal price. On day 20 the registration is deleted and until day 50 only a paid restore brings it back. Nothing at all can be done in the 5 days that follow, and on day 55 the name is open to anyone. There is exactly one way never to enter this chain: keep auto-renewal on.

What happens day by day after it expires Lifecycle diagram for .partners, left to right: the name starts out available; once registered, the site and e-mail work; day 0 is the expiry date and the domain goes on Client Hold; for the first 20 days renewal at the normal price stays open; on day 20 the registration is deleted and a 30-day redemption period begins; on day 50 redemption closes and a 5-day pending delete window starts; on day 55 the name is open to anyone again. The site and e-mail stay down from day 0 through day 55. Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .partners address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 10 years

Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Renewal Window (Client Hold)

Day 0 – 20

On its expiry date your .partners domain is put on Client Hold: the site and e-mail go down that day, but the registration is still yours. A single renewal within these first 20 days brings everything back exactly as it was — nothing is lost. The only difference is that a $11.12 late renewal fee is now added to the renewal price; renewing before the expiry date avoids that fee entirely.

Redemption Period (Redemption / RGP)

Day 20 – 50

On day 20 the registration is deleted and the 30-day redemption period that ICANN requires of every gTLD registry begins. The name is not released to anyone during this time; only you can take it back, by paying the restore fee, until day 50. That fee is far higher than a renewal — renewing on time is always the cheaper route.

Pending Delete (Pending Delete)

Day 50 – 55

Once the redemption window closes too, the domain enters its final 5 days and there is no way back. Neither renewal nor restore works here; nobody — your registrar included — can return the name to you. The registry uses this window as the last hold before the name goes back into the pool.

Open to Anyone Again (Released)

After day 55

On day 55 the name .partners returns to the pool and anyone can register it. Sought-after names are often gone within seconds, and there is no guaranteed way to get one back. Yet staying out of this timeline is entirely in your hands: leave auto-renewal on and the expiry date will never catch you off guard.

The timeline above is the schedule Atak Domain applies and publishes. The ICANN chart you will find elsewhere shows a renewal window of up to 45 days after expiry; ICANN's policy on expired registrations (section 2.2.1) lets registrars delete an expired domain at any time, provided they disclose their policy in advance. We apply that window as 20 days and publish it here in plain sight. Full text of the policy: ICANN Expired Registration Recovery Policy

Frequently Asked Questions About .partners Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • No legal form is required. The open registration commitment forbids the registry from applying an identity-based eligibility test, so a sole trader registers on the same terms as a limited company. The reverse holds as well: the address does not verify your partnership structure for a visitor. Try candidates in .partners domain search.

  • It does, and that is one of the common uses in this zone. Placed after your brand name, the ending gives you a readable way to separate a partner-only area from your main site, gathering the login screen, price lists and marketing assets at a distinct address. It also makes access rights easier to manage separately.

  • The test is how the word reads inside your profession. Both are familiar in law and consulting, but the first emphasises an equal relationship between principals, while the second describes a bench of specialists and affiliated staff. Pick the one your clients would use. Check both at once through bulk domain search.

  • Generally yes, but not without limits. The agreement obliges the registry to limit the use of proxy and privacy registration services in cases of malfeasance, so privacy can be lifted while an abuse allegation is examined. Accurate underlying records therefore matter more than the privacy layer itself. Inspect the published record with whois search.

  • The zone holds 21,195 registrations with 17,203 in the zone file. That publication share of 81 per cent shows most names are genuinely in use, so waiting for a taken label to expire rarely pays off. On the other hand the zone is small next to the large generic endings, and a brand name combined with a programme word still works comfortably.

  • Under the standard gTLD flow it usually completes within five days. The name must be unlocked, you need the authorisation code, and the registrant email address has to be reachable so the approval message arrives. No additional eligibility review applies to this extension. Start the process on the domain transfer page.
