No. The registry's own question page puts it plainly: every natural person or organisation may register its .sx domain names, and an address on the island of Sint Maarten is not required. An individual living in Türkiye and a company incorporated there apply on exactly the same terms. There is no local address, local contact or trustee requirement, and no commercial register extract or identity document is asked for. The only compulsory intermediary is an accredited registrar: the registry takes no direct applications and processes a registration only through an authorised company. Names are allocated first come, first served.

Between one and ten years, in whole years. The policy requires whoever registers or renews the name to choose the number of years and sets the ceiling at ten. The term starts on the day of registration and ends on the same day of that month, so your expiry follows your own anniversary rather than the calendar year. You may renew at any point before the term runs out. One more detail is worth knowing: if the holder of the domain changes, the current term is extended by one year, subject to the ten-year ceiling.

You get eighty days in total, but the three stages differ sharply. When the term ends a forty-five-day grace period starts: the name is renewed automatically and stays active, so your site and email are not cut off. A thirty-day redemption period follows, during which the name stops working and recovering it costs a restore fee on top of the renewal. The last link is a five-day pending delete period; no operation is possible, and at the end the name is purged and opens to anyone. The registry is not obliged to warn you beforehand, so put the date in your own calendar.

There are two separate operations. For a change of registrar you appoint the new company, it notifies the registry, and the registry emails you an authorisation code directly. If you do not confirm within seven days a reminder follows with a further seven-day window, and failing that the request is cancelled automatically. This is why the email address held by the registry must be working. In the registry's whois output the name, street, city, postal code, telephone and fax fields of the registrant, admin, technical and billing contacts all come back marked as redacted for privacy, and instead of an address the email line prints a fixed sentence pointing you to the registrar. In practice that means a name held by a company shows the company, while a name held by a private individual has no organisation to show and leaves no personal data public. The policy states that every domain name holder accepts that any proceeding concerning the name is conducted before the Czech Arbitration Court, applying ICANN's uniform domain name dispute resolution policy and the rapid suspension procedure. That separates the extension from many generic ones, where a complainant can pick among several approved providers; here the route leads to one institution. The holder also undertakes to take part in good faith. One consequence matters commercially: while proceedings run the name cannot be transferred, and a transfer becomes possible only after the decision.

No. The policy states that a .sx name may consist only of the letters a-z, the digits 0-9 and the hyphen, so accented characters and any non-Latin script are refused. The hyphen has its own rules: a name may not begin or end with one, and it may not carry two consecutive hyphens in the third and fourth positions — that last rule closes off the position the punycode prefix occupies. The registry has also published no language table in IANA's repository of internationalised domain name tables. A name in another script therefore has to be written out in Latin letters.

On 10 October 2010 the Netherlands Antilles were dissolved and Sint Maarten became a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, on equal footing with Aruba and Curaçao; the island was assigned the ISO country code SX, and .sx entered the root zone on 20 December of the same year. It took over from the Netherlands Antilles address .an, and the handover was written into the rules: holders of .an names resident on the island were given a priority window to claim the matching .sx name.
