WHAT IS A .UA DOMAIN

.ua Domain: Ukraine's Trademark-Gated Country Extension

.ua is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) of Ukraine, entered into the root zone on 1 December 1992. The zone is administered from Kyiv by Hostmaster Ltd. Two rulebooks apply together to names registered directly under .ua: the public domain regulation of 24 January 2020 and the .UA Regulation of 1 April 2014. Where the two conflict, the .UA Regulation prevails, because it is the text that sets this zone's own conditions.

What sets the zone apart is its eligibility clause. Article 3.3 of the .UA Regulation delegates a name only where its spelling matches a trademark the applicant is entitled to use in Ukraine. That trademark may be protected in either of two ways: through a Ukrainian certificate of its own, or through protection obtained on Ukrainian territory under the Madrid Agreement. The second route is what makes .ua reachable for rights holders abroad. Nationality, residency and a Ukrainian address are not required; protection of the mark in the country is.

The numbers show how narrow that gate is: Hostmaster's statistics for 1 August 2026 record 25,343 names at the second level of .ua, against 270,731 in com.ua, which asks for no trademark at all. The trademark number is a mandatory field in the application, the registry reviews every request by hand, and that review may not exceed 14 days. If you hold the mark, check whether your candidate is free today with domain search.

Your domain survives the expiry of the trademark: Article 4.6 of the .UA Regulation checks the term of the trademark right at renewal and emails the registrar a notice if that term has lapsed. Its closing sentence is unambiguous, though: the registration period of the domain name is extended regardless of the state of the trademark right. Letting the mark lapse therefore does not switch your address off overnight. Relying on that is still risky: a new registration, a change of registrant or the restoration of a deleted name all pass through the same trademark check again. View required documents →

Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .ua address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 10 years

Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Redemption Period (Redemption Period)

Day 0 – 30

The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.

Pending Delete Period (Pending Delete Period)

Day 30 – 35

If the redemption window is missed too, the domain enters the final stage and waits to be deleted. Renewal and recovery are no longer possible here; when the period ends the registration is removed for good.

Domain Is Available Again

After day 35

Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .ua Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • Yes. Article 3.3 of the .UA Regulation states that second-level .ua names are delegated only where the spelling of the name matches a trademark the applicant is entitled to use in Ukraine. The mark must be a word mark; where a registered mark combines a design with text, only the protected verbal part counts. The sibling zones that ask for no mark are com.ua and net.ua, where names are allocated in order of application.

  • It can. The regulation recognises a trademark in two forms: a Ukrainian certificate of registration, or protection obtained on Ukrainian territory under the Madrid Agreement. The second opens the zone to foreign companies holding an international registration that designates Ukraine. The company need not be incorporated in Ukraine and needs no address or representative there. If you rely on the Madrid route, the application must include an extract from the official bulletin of the WIPO International Bureau, certified by the competent authority.

  • Article 3.9 lists three situations. If you rely on a Ukrainian trademark certificate, a duly certified copy of it; if you rely on protection under the Madrid Agreement, a certified extract from the WIPO bulletin; and if the mark is not registered in your own name, a certified official-bulletin publication of the assignment or the licence. The technical application additionally makes the trademark number a mandatory field. The registry reviews the application against these documents by hand, within 14 days at most.

  • Article 3.10 defines the check in four steps, applied in that order: whether the mark is protected in Ukraine, whether it corresponds to the name under the spelling and transliteration rules of articles 3.6 to 3.8, whether the contact in the registrant field is the holder of the rights in the mark, and whether the term of those rights has lapsed. Article 3.11 states that an application failing this check is treated as erroneous and rejected. The refusal notice identifies which step was not met.

  • Article 3.5 limits the spelling of a mark to Latin letters, digits and the hyphen, so a mark in another alphabet is transliterated. Article 3.6 gives the registrant a choice among five transliteration tables: the table approved by Cabinet of Ministers resolution no. 55 of 2010, the GOST 16876-71 standard, an additional table published by the registry, the 1996 table of the legal terminology commission, and the 1995 «Ukrainian Latin» table. Special characters such as an ampersand are either written out in English or dropped.

  • Article 3.2 of the .UA Regulation requires a name of at least 1 and at most 63 characters. It must begin and end with a letter or a digit and may contain only Latin letters, digits and the hyphen; a hyphen may not sit in the third and fourth positions at the same time. That last rule avoids collision with the «xn--» prefix of IDN encoding and in practice keeps non-Latin names out of the second level of .ua. The character range shown on this page may differ from the registry's own text.

  • At expiry the name moves into the auto-renew grace period, where DNS service continues and deletion happens only on the registrar's own request. Once deleted, the name leaves DNS and stays in redemptionPeriod for 30 days, followed by a five-day pendingDelete. One warning is specific to .ua: article 4.5 states that if a restore request is filed less than 14 days before the redemption period ends, the name may be deleted before the request is processed, because it is reviewed by hand.

  • Through UA-DRP. According to Hostmaster's own timeline the policy took effect for second-level .ua names on 19 March 2019; it reached com.ua on 19 December 2019, org.ua on 1 November 2024, and net.ua together with in.ua on 15 February 2025. The texts in force are the Policy of 15 February 2025 and the Rules of 1 November 2024; cases are decided by administrative panels of the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center. A separate decision governs how the policy applies under martial law.
